STICK SELECTION ADVICE

1.      Shape

Every senior stick will have either MB, LB, XLB or XLB DF listed straight after the title.

·        MB (Mid Bow): This is a more traditional straighter shape. Ideal for trapping and keeping the ball flat when hitting. The limitation of this shape is that it is difficult to implement some of the modern skills (dragging, flicking, jinking, over heading etc.) of hockey with. Ideal for a player hitting the ball a lot.

A beginner or more basic hockey player should usually start with the MB shape.

·        LB (Low Bow): This is the best shape for an all round player and the most commonly used shape amongst experienced players. A gradual bow at the bottom of the stick assists with modern hockey skills however shouldn’t significantly compromise your ability to hit the ball flat.

·       XLB (Extreme Low Bow): This shape is generally limited to advanced players who are very skillful and have developed aerial skills. It is amazing for lifting the ball however can be more challenging to hit and trap with.

·        XLB DF (Extreme Low Bow with drag flicking indent): This stick is designed specifically for drag flickers and should not be used by a general player.

2.      Carbon

There are various reasons to use different carbon contents however as a general rule a higher carbon content means a better stick. More carbon makes a stick stiffer and stronger which means more power and greater durability.

Generally a stick with 70% carbon can be a considered a ‘top end stick’. From here a player that wants a stiffer stick to hit the ball harder might select 95% or 100% carbon whereas a player who wants more feel and control might select 70% or 80% carbon.

Our website allows you to use the filter to only show sticks with 70% or more carbon.

3    Size

Hockey Stick sizes are in inches.

For a junior the stick should be approximately at the child’s belly button. As much as you need to allow for some growth room, be careful not to go too far above the belly button because the child will struggle to control the stick.

Depending on their height, a child will move into a senior stick at 11 – 13 years of age. As a general guide, senior sticks sizes are as follows:

·         Size 36.5: 162cm – 178cm

·         Size 37.5: 179cm – 189cm

·         Size 38.5: 190cm – 200cm

·         Size 39.5: 200cm + (more designed for older players with back problems)

A shorter stick will allow greater control whereas a longer stick will allow more reach and power.
